Utica: The Last Refuge - documentary film screening and panel

  • Davis Auditorium, Skidmore College (map)

Presented by Saratoga Immigration Coalition

The screening Utica: The Last Refuge" will be followed by a discussion with director Loch Phillips. This documentary follows the Azeins, a refugee family from Sudan, over the course of two and a half years as they transition from isolation to being part of a larger community. After living in refugee camps in Ethiopia for six years, the Azeins land in Utica, N.Y. The rustbelt city has a long history of immigration and its more recent humanitarian efforts to welcome refugees contrasts with the tensions and the political debates about immigrants and refugees at the time of their arrival. “Utica: The Last Refuge” highlights the deep work done both by resettlement agencies, communities, and refugees alike, and shows how thoughtful civic humanitarianism can result in a myriad of benefits for communities and their existing residents. The screening is co-sponsored by Saratoga Immigration Coalition, and Skidmore College departments of Anthropology, Political Science, and World Languages and Literatures. Davis Auditorium

Deep Horse Meditation Practice for Peace

ACTT Naturally offers an original equine assisted learning program for first responders, veterans, executive leaders, and more. The curriculum provides a series of experiential processes that employs the non verbal communication between horse and human, a deep and transformative meditational engagement for all peace seeking people.

About ACTT Naturally
The mission of ACTT Naturally is to transition Thoroughbreds from racing to new productive careers using the gentle techniques of natural horsemanship. Through our programs ACTT Naturally engages the horse human bond, facilitating mutual growth and positive transformation.

VALERIE BUCK
Founder
Valerie Buck founded ACTT Naturally in 2013, after many years of repurposing off-track-Thoroughbreds. She worked 28 years in the Thoroughbred racing industry, and while she worked in top stables, sitting aboard some of the best horses in her generation, she also found value in horses no longer able to compete. Valerie uses the same patient touch she had for champions to retrain forgotten horses. She’s found success locating forever homes and useful careers for many horses. Valerie’s ongoing education in Natural Horsemanship creates well mannered, mentally and physically balanced horses ready for bright new futures.

ACTT Naturally readied and supplied horses to launch a local veterans program. It was here that Valerie steeled her determination to begin a program for a larger demographic of people in need. A program designed to help those who have suffered through tragic losses, major setbacks, large or small disappointments, or to overcome the challenges that visit every life sooner or later. She and her team help horses and humans heal together

Los Liminals

In homage to National Hispanic Heritage month, Skidmore is hosting a series of events that will kick off with this duo from El Paso, Texas performing free for the wider community at Caffè Lena. Los Liminals draw on a mix of history, music, and spoken-word poetry, exploring the liminal space of the

border and its residents over time. They recreate the past using the voices of those who lived it; conjuring perspectives as diverse as legendary mystic Teresa Urrea, ancient footsteps in the White Sands of New Mexico, and the daughter of Pancho Villa’s bandleader. The duo is made up of acclaimed El Paso historian and musician David Dorado Romo and vocalist/poet Adriana Lopez. Their music is meant to inspire audiences to learn about El Paso history – and draw their own meaning from it. Lopez explains: “If we can make music that creates curiosity, more than anything, from anyone, to try to go on their own journey … that’s really where all these ideas came from.” Their music resonates with people who appreciate artistic integrity, musical exploration, and a genuine connection with the audience. Presented in partnership with Skidmore College Department of Latin American, Caribbean & Latinx Studies.
